This website has been developed to introduce potential adopters to the pit bull terrier breed in hopes of placing our available pits into loving homes.

Did you know that ....

... the pit bull terrier breed consists of

1) American Pit Bull Terrier,

2) American Staffordshire Terrier, and

3) Staffordshire Bull Terrier?

... in 2006 American Temperament Test, this breed achieved an 84.4% passing score? So, how does that compare to other breeds you know? The Australian Shepherd achieved an 80.7%, the Golden Retriever achieved an 83.8%, and all dogs combined achieved an 81.5%! What does this tell you... the pit bull terrier breed can make great partners!

However, this breed and pit mixes tend to languish at shelters across the country because most people are very nervous about the breed. This is understandable given the press, but what people do not realize is that these dogs can make absolutely wonderful family pets. There are many myths about the pit bull terrier. As is important for any breed of dog you choose as your next pet, make sure they fit into your lifestyle, home environment, and have the personality you are looking for. But don't discount this breed just because of what you have heard. Do your research and make a well informed decision on what dog will work best for you and your family!

Counties with Restrictions on Pit Bulls

Please note that the adoption restrictions of pit bull terriers and mixes in the following counties (as per Washington Post article on 7/30/07):

Adoption policies by area:

1. District of Columbia - allows pit bull adoptions

2. Northern VA - varies by county

Alexandria - only allows mixed breed adoptions but officials plan on changing the policy to allow adoptions of pitbulls that have been evaluated and cleared.
Arlington County - new rule allowing adoptions has been approved and might be implemented as early as fall 2007
Fairfax County - adoptions allowed
Loudon County - as per Washington Post article on 10/16/07 adoptions are allowed on pit bulls not deemed to be dangerous.
Prince William County - policy changed in December 2006 to allow adoptions

3. Maryland - varies by county
